The Case for the Block Universe: A Philosophical Argument from Causation, Perfection, and Temporal Structure
This essay develops a cumulative philosophical case for the block universe theory of time (eternalism), according to which past, present, and future events are equally real within a complete four-dimensional structure. Rather than appealing to empirical results from physics or neuroscience, it draws on metaphysical considerations concerning causation, explanation, cognition, divine perfection, and the logic of completeness. It argues that determinate cognition and successful explanation are naturally understood in terms of intelligible relations within a fully articulated structure of events, rather than processes involving an ontologically open future. Causal dependence is likewise interpreted as most coherent when embedded within a complete totality rather than an unfolding present. The essay further examines classical accounts of divine timelessness and omniscience, suggesting that non-sequential knowledge is more naturally aligned with an eternalist framework than with presentism. Finally, it extends these considerations to ideas of perfection and creation, proposing that a fully perfect creative act is most coherently understood as bringing about a complete structure rather than a temporally open-ended process. Taken together, these considerations converge in support of eternalism as a unified and explanatorily coherent metaphysical framework.
