The Nodal Existence Theory_ Formal Paper
This paper introduces Nodal Existence Theory (NET), a philosophical framework proposing that human purpose is a structural property of the physical universe rather than a transcendent assignment or a subjective construction. Drawing on thermodynamic cosmology (Prigogine and Stengers 1984; Schneider and Kay 1994), pancomputationalism (Zuse 1969; Wolfram 2002), and Integrated Information Theory (Tononi 2008), NET argues that the universe is a self-processing, self-organizing energy-information system and that the human being is a functioning node within that system — an open dissipative structure whose existence constitutes a structural function the system requires in order to process and observe itself at the biological scale. The central claim of NET is that purpose is not a question the universe left unanswered. It is a function the universe is continuously performing through human existence. This paper maps the cosmological architecture underlying that claim, articulates its three foundational pillars, situates NET within and against the existing philosophical literature, addresses the principal objections, and proposes an interdisciplinary research agenda. The central claim is that the question of human purpose has remained unresolved not because it is unanswerable, but because the cosmological framework from which it has historically been asked was formed before the scientific tools required to answer it were available.
