The Crisis of Information Verification: The Hand, the Network, and the Problem of Knowledge Grounding
Short Abstract: This paper investigates the escalating crisis of information verification within the framework of a materialist ontology of distributed cognition. It argues that human epistemic evolution has relied on a complex of physical, logical, and institutional filters, originally rooted in the sensorimotor grounding provided by the functionally emancipated hand. As cognitive externalization advanced, the rapid increase in information speed progressively outpaced the capacity of these traditional verification mechanisms. The paper introduces the concept of semantic entropy—a heuristic indicator of the growing proportion of unverified statements—and shows how its accumulation drives the cascading degradation of knowledge during iterative transmission. The current semantic stage of externalization, driven by large language models, is shown to generate a massive volume of plausible but ungrounded content. The contemporary crisis of knowledge is thus framed as a systemic breakdown of feedback mechanisms in an era of autonomous semantic generation.
