Fear With No One to Feel It?
This piece lays out the conceptual foundations of a simple but, perhaps, surprising construction: a minimal agent built to run emotion-like control while lacking the functional marks of conscious access. It supplies the underlying reasoning—why emotion understood as control and the architecture of awareness might come apart, why such a separation can be exhibited while feeling itself is never detected, and how the same construction serves as a theory-agnostic template. The claim is deliberately asymmetric. The construction can show that a specified affective-control organization does not require a specified list of access-consciousness features. The method cannot show that feeling is absent, nor that feeling would appear were those features added. The essay therefore treats architecture as inspectable and phenomenology as unresolved. It is written for an interdisciplinary audience, so that readers from computer science, neuroscience, or philosophy of mind can quickly situate the work within their own framework.
