The Observer Constraint: A Detailed Analysis of Why Real-Time Qualia Cannot Be Fully Explained Within Physical Causality
This paper proposes the “Observer Constraint,” a principled limitation on scientific explanations of real-time qualia that arises from the fact that the observer is identical with the system being observed. I argue that any fully physical, causal description of conscious experience is subject to an intrinsic temporal offset imposed by information-processing and signaling constraints, including the universal speed-of-light limit. Because the observer cannot stand outside their own sensory-processing architecture, the physical basis of experience can only be accessed retrospectively—never in the real-time immediacy in which qualia appear. This structural asymmetry between observation and experience implies that a complete real-time theory of qualia is impossible within standard physical causality. I further analyze how this constraint parallels quantum-mechanical limits on self-measurement, suggesting a deeper, formally specifiable connection between consciousness and physical measurement theory.
