Erosion and Friction: A Two-Level Ontology of Structural Appearance and Pre-Conditioned Limitation

This article proposes a two‑level ontological framework that distinguishes friction from erosion while rigorously restricting its scope to dissipative complex adaptive systems (physical, biological, and social systems characterized by energy/information flow and non‑equilibrium dynamics). Friction is defined as the phenomenal domain of interaction, resistance, and meaning‑generation among structured agents. Erosion is introduced not as a universal metaphysical substance but as a conditional transcendental precondition: for any system that exhibits temporal persistence through interaction, its structural capacity must undergo continuous degradation. Employing a quasi‑transcendental argument formalized through modal logic, I argue that erosion is a necessary precondition for the very intelligibility of frictional stability, yet its epistemic status remains that of a regulative inference rather than a directly observable entity. The article explicitly addresses the dangers of over‑generalization, metaphorical slippage, and category‑mistakes by confining cross‑domain analogies to formally defined parameters (entropy production, allostatic load, institutional friction). The concept of finite continuity replaces authenticity as a normative horizon for systems persisting under exhaustion. A dedicated section responds to major objections, clarifying the boundaries between ontological, empirical, and epistemological levels. Keywords: ontological erosion, phenomenal friction, conditional transcendental, dissipative systems, finite continuity, scope restriction, regulative inference.
