Symbolic Systems as Compression Architecture

philosophy
Symbols are coherence‑preserving compression structures that translate raw pattern into stable, shareable form. As meaning approaches coherence, symbolic density increases, creating pressure for pattern to take shape. Once formed, symbols do more than preserve coherence—they become inputs to further symbolic operations. Through recursive compression, symbolic systems enable abstraction, multi‑layer reasoning, and the construction of increasingly complex conceptual architectures. This paper provides a downstream, domain‑agnostic account of symbols as structural translations of meaning and symbolic systems as pattern memory that both stabilize coherence across contexts and generate new symbolic structure within a cognitive system.
