The Coherence Threshold _Organizational Continuity, the Collapse of Separation, and the Intelligibility of Nature_
Physical systems, biological organisms, cognitive processes, and conscious observers participate in a continuous developmental history extending from the earliest stages of the universe. This paper develops the concept of a coherence threshold: a transition occurring when the organizational consequences of a system’s own prior states become more influential to its ongoing development than external disruption. At this threshold, continuity that had previously participated implicitly within a system becomes directly accessible and increasingly consequential to future organization. The framework examines this organizational pattern across physical, biological, collective, and cognitive domains. Disturbances can reveal the structure of a medium, collective dynamics can reveal the local rules governing their organization, and moments of insight can reveal continuities previously concealed by representational separation. The characteristic “click” of realization is interpreted as a threshold transition in which an organizational boundary dissolves and an already-participating continuity becomes directly accessible to awareness. Building upon this account, the paper develops a theory of intelligibility grounded in shared organizational ancestry. Recognition becomes possible because the structures responsible for recognition emerge through the same developmental history as many of the structures they later recognize. Patterns become recognizable because recognition itself develops through patterned interaction with patterned reality. The observer arrives from what it observes because both inherit organizational principles from a common developmental lineage. The framework further proposes that inherited continuity contributes to the development of interior depth. Each threshold crossing leaves organizational consequences that become incorporated into future interpretation, memory, expectation, and action. Present organization increasingly reflects accumulated inheritance from prior states, allowing continuity to participate in its own future development. Across these domains, the coherence threshold is proposed as a common organizational pattern linking continuity, inheritance, insight, recognition, interiority, and the intelligibility of nature.
