Continuity as an Organizing Variable: Toward Measurable Signatures of Interior Dynamics

Questions concerning consciousness, persistence, and organized complexity frequently converge upon a shared problem involving continuity through time. Biological systems preserve recognizable identity despite material turnover, cognitive systems maintain coherent subjective flow despite fluctuating neural activity, and artificial systems increasingly display sophisticated behavior while raising questions concerning the relationship between computational performance and organized interior structure. Existing approaches often emphasize complexity, information integration, representation, or local mechanisms of cognition, yet the role of continuity itself remains comparatively underexamined as an organizing variable. This work proposes continuity of internally sustained propagation as a measurable organizational condition contributing directly to persistence and interior dynamics. Within the Coherence Threshold framework, organizational behavior is described through the relationship R = λ_self / λ_env ≥ R★, where λ_self represents internally sustaining dynamics and λ_env represents disruptive environmental influence. The framework suggests that future states increasingly inherit structure from previous states as internally sustained propagation becomes increasingly dominant. Specific cross domain predictions emerge from this proposal. Continuity of retained propagation is predicted to correspond more strongly with organized interior behavior than complexity alone. Systems approaching threshold conditions are expected to exhibit increasing instability prior to transitions in organization. Recognition events are proposed to emerge from preceding stabilization processes rather than appearing in isolation. Candidate measurable proxies are discussed across neural systems, biological systems, and artificial systems, including recurrence strength, autocorrelation persistence, recurrent connectivity, context retention, and perturbation dynamics. The central proposal is that persistence, self reference, and organized interiority may emerge from shared dynamical conditions involving inherited structure across time. The framework is developed as an experimentally accessible research program intended to generate measurable predictions across biological and artificial systems.
