Humanity often prides itself on being “progressive.” Technological advancements are exponential, lifespans are extended, energy is converted with greater efficiency, information flows at near-instantaneous speeds, and artificial intelligence edges closer to the boundaries of human cognition. Yet, behind this dazzling ascent lies a deep paradox: Why is ecological fragility increasing as civilization progresses? Why do we feel more anxious despite abundant knowledge? Why are we spiritually hollow despite unprecedented freedom? Why does humanity, equipped with the most powerful tools in history, seem to be losing faith in its own future? This is not a coincidence, nor merely a technical misstep, but a revelation of a fundamental flaw in the structure of civilization itself: Is human civilization being uplifted by a spiral of desire, or is it descending into an abyss of greed?
