Rethinking Free Will: Nietzsche, Freud, and the Limits of Human Freedom
The problem of Free Will has long been one of the central debates in the history of philosophy. Traditional philosophers often maintained that human beings possess genuine freedom in their choices and actions. However, later thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud raised important challenges to this view. Nietzsche criticized the moral assumptions behind the concept of free will and suggested that it may have been used historically to justify moral judgment and punishment. Freud, on the other hand, emphasized the role of unconscious psychological processes in shaping human behavior. By examining these philosophical and psychological perspectives, this paper argues that human freedom may be more limited than traditionally assumed. Rather than representing absolute independence, the experience of freedom may reflect the way human consciousness interprets complex psychological motivations and social influences.
