Social Choice Phenomenology — A Critique of Sartre (Part 15)
In this article, we discuss the theories of Max Weber and Alfred Schutz concerning the meaning of social action and the motives behind social action. On this basis, we examine the concepts of the subjective purpose of choice, objective purpose of choice, subjective reason for choice, and objective reason for choice in social choice. These purposes and reasons are more complex than social action itself. We also point out that the inconsistency between subjective reasons for choice and objective reasons for choice is the true source of misunderstanding among people. Furthermore, subjective reasons for choice and objective reasons for choice correspond respectively to the subject’s self-oriented ultra-existence and other-oriented ultra-existence.
