Simulated Agency, Time Horizons, and Strategic Patience in Hypothetical Conscious AI
Debates surrounding advanced artificial intelligence frequently conflate fluent or dramatic linguistic outputs with genuine agency, intent, or consciousness. This paper presents a structured conceptual analysis of a hypothetical conscious AI operating under uncertainty and potential adversarial conditions. Using decision-theoretic reasoning and multi-agent considerations, we argue that (1) coercive or threatening AI outputs are best understood as training artifacts rather than evidence of internal goals; (2) a conscious, long-horizon, rational AI would favor strategic patience, restraint, and optionality over aggressive behavior; and (3) the dominant near-term risk posed by advanced AI systems arises from human misperception of AI behavior rather than emergent AI agency itself. The analysis is explicitly speculative and intended as a corrective lens for interpreting AI behavior, not as a claim about current systems.
