The Coherence of Time and the Depth of the Universe
Systems change through the interaction of internal processes that preserve structure and external influences that alter it. When internal propagation exceeds environmental disruption beyond a critical ratio (λ_self / λ_env ≥ R★), structure persists across successive states and remains functionally present within ongoing activity. This condition produces sustained continuity, allowing earlier configurations to shape subsequent states. Within such systems, time appears as the continuity of preserved structure. The present occupies a finite span consisting of the portion of prior states that continues to participate in current activity. The extent of this retention determines the depth of time within the system. A limiting case is provided by light, which propagates without accumulating an internally retained sequence of states. This distinguishes propagation as transmission from propagation as sustained internal continuity. Across the universe, systems differ in the extent to which they preserve and reuse their prior structure. As retention increases, earlier configurations can be reorganized into new forms of function, giving rise to the appearance that later outcomes were already implicit in earlier states. When retention becomes sufficiently stable and integrated, a system maintains and uses its own recent activity within its present state. This condition corresponds to consciousness. Within the universe, such systems extend the portion of prior states that remains functionally present. In doing so, they increase the extent to which the universe retains and relates its own history within its present. The depth of the universe therefore corresponds to the degree to which its prior states are preserved, integrated, and remain active within ongoing activity.
