A Blend of Basic and Non-Basic Responsibility
In this commentary on Carolina Sartorio’s “Causalism: A Framework for Moral Responsibility,” I focus on Sartorio’s distinction between basic and non-basic responsibility. After presenting a case in which an agent forms their character through free choice, I invite Sartorio to say more about cases of this sort that seem to blend basic and non-basic responsibility. I present two ways one might analyze such cases, one of which I take to be more plausible but also not to fit as well with Sartorio’s treatment of basic and non-basic responsibility.
