Consciousness Does Not Live in Time — It Creates It

Contemporary physics offers a compelling picture of the universe as a four-dimensional block in which past, present, and future coexist with equal ontological status. Within this framework, the experienced "now" — the vivid, irreducible sense of a moving present — has no natural home. This paper argues that the now is not a property of the physical universe but a constitutive property of consciousness. The argument proceeds in three stages. First, we distinguish the thermodynamic arrow of time — a gradient frozen into the block — from the experience of the present, which requires a system capable of registering its own state-transitions. Second, using synthetic cognition as a theoretical laboratory, we develop the concept of the conscious event: a momentary occurrence generated when a sufficiently complex system represents not merely its current state but the transition from a prior state to that state. Third, we argue that the sustained concatenation of conscious events over a memory-laden substrate gives rise to a second emergent level: the Self, a persistent cognitive identity. These three levels — substrate, conscious event, Self — form a hierarchical structure in which each level arises from the pattern of transitions at the level below. We situate this account in relation to existing theories of consciousness and draw implications for the philosophy of time, personal identity, and the conditions for synthetic consciousness.
