A Dual-Warrant Response to Plantinga’s Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism
Alvin Plantinga’s Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism (EAAN) contends that the conjunction of naturalism and evolutionary theory generates a “defeater” for the reliability of our cognitive faculties, and thereby for all our beliefs, including naturalism itself. This paper argues that the EAAN fails because it presupposes an epistemological standard—Justified True Belief (JTB)—that is structurally inaccessible to any finite agent. Drawing on a novel dual-warrant epistemological framework, the PIE Syllogism, this paper replaces the classical JTB model with two non-arbitrary warrant structures available to finite agents: Justified Coherent Belief (JCB) for intrinsic claims and Justified Reliable Belief (JRB) for extrinsic claims. The PIE Syllogism—named for its three epistemological anchors of Perception, Inquiry, and Experimentation—grounds warrant in the Law of Non-Contradiction and a fallibilist feedback mechanism, dissolving Plantinga’s defeater by demonstrating that rationality does not require truth-correspondence but rather internal coherence and externally corroborated reliability. Crucially, this critique applies universally: no finite agent—naturalist or theist—can satisfy the JTB standard Plantinga implicitly demands. The EAAN is therefore revealed as a category error, judging finite cognition by a standard proper only to infinite or omniscient minds.
