Empathy as a Structural Condition for Phenomenal Appearance
This paper examines the conditions under which phenomenal consciousness (appearance) arises, using empathy as an analytical entry point. While functional explanations and phe nomenal experience are often treated separately, this study argues that certain functional struc tures—specifically those involved in empathy—necessarily entail the presence of appearance. By analyzing empathy as the reconstruction of another’s state within an internal system endowed with meaning, this paper proposes that such structures require phenomenal manifestation. The argument is further extended beyond biological systems, suggesting applicability to artificial systems that instantiate similar structures.
