The Space Between Time

Motichek argues that what philosophers ordinarily call abstract entities — guilt, fear, pain considered as discomfort, lived time, mathematical structure — are not a category of thing parallel to physical things. They are filters: operations applied to physical substrates during inference. Their identity is constituted by what they are applied to. Guilt requires evidence to be guilt; fear requires an object to be fear; pain requires a registering system to be pain. When the coupling to a substrate is removed, what remains is not a thinner version of the same abstract but a different and thinner abstract one rung down, or nothing operative at all. The architecture this implies — abstract filter applied to tangible substrate, with inference as the operation that couples them — offers a third option between eliminative strategies that reduce abstract phenomena to their physical correlates and dualist strategies that preserve them at the cost of leaving their relation to the physical obscure. The paper develops the architecture through worked cases drawn from disparate domains (lived time, pain, recursive inquiry, constructed character voice), addresses an operational diagnostic that supports the architecture descriptively without establishing it, and indicates a structural question concerning the origin of filtering itself that the architecture surfaces without resolving. Keywords: abstract entities, philosophy of mind, philosophy of time, operationalism, inference, coupling, filter architecture.
